DJ Lisa in aid
plea for Niger
Fast friends drive 'will save lives'
By Ashleigh Wallace
Downtown Radio DJ Lisa Flavelle
today urged people across Northern Ireland to support Concern's Fast
Friends campaign.
The Belfast broadcaster made the
call ahead of a trip to Niger she is making next week with staff from the
aid agency.
Earlier this year, Concern urged
local donors to help raise funds to alleviate the suffering of millions
starving in the west African country. The famine was attributed to a
number of factors including drought and a locust infestation which
destroyed crops.
And while the situation is no longer
considered a crisis, tens of thousands of people are still classified as
starving.
Concern currently runs a number of
community therapeutic centres where malnourished children are assessed and
fed.
During her trip, Lisa will be
visiting the feeding centres to see for herself how money raised for
Concern in Northern Ireland is being used to help those most in need.
Downtown Radio is supporting this
year's Fast Friends day, which is taking place on December 8. Instead of
being asked to go without food for the day, members of the public are this
year being urged to stage an event - no matter how small - to raise funds
for the aid agency.
Lisa will be conducting live links
from Niger which will be broadcast on Downtown Radio.
Lisa said: "When Concern issued
an appeal for Niger they were very impressed with the money raised in
Northern Ireland so it was decided someone from here should go out. When
we're in Niger, we will be visiting different centres. Mothers come to
these centres with their sickest children in their arms and they are given
foodstuffs to take away with them to help feed the rest of their families
at home. People travel for miles to visit these centres.
Lisa will also be putting a special
programme together on her return to be broadcast at Christmas and will
also be posting details of her trip on the radio's website at
www.downtown.co.uk.
Urging everyone to support this
year's Fast Friends day, Lisa said: "It doesn't have to be a big
event, you could invite your friends round for coffee and charge them £1
a cup.
"A tiny little thing can make
such a difference."
